In a statement here on Wednesday, the Malaysia External Trade Development Corp (Matrade) said the Specialised Marketing Mission (SMM) on Franchise Business to Vietnam was held from Dec 15-17.

Matrade said it organised the SMM in collaboration with the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism, Malaysian Franchise Association and Perbadanan Nasional Bhd.

A total of nine local companies participated in the SMM, it said.

It said the mission was organised in response to the potential market available based on Vietnam’s large percentage of young population, political stability and continued economic growth.

Matrade said the potential businesses identified covered areas such as children’s education, fabric care outlets, fast-food outlets, fine dining restaurants, eyewear products, human resource training and development and Islamic publications.

The Franchise Business Economic Outlook for 2010 report was prepared by the firm on behalf of the International Franchise Association’s Education Foundation.

The survey results did not shake the resolve of franchising industry watcher Philip St. Jacques, partner with GMLV/St. Jacques, a brand marketing firm to franchise and retail businesses that’s based in Newark.

“What we have been seeing with our clients, especially in the franchise development arena, is an uptick in applicants to more established brands and brands that appear to be ‘recession-proof’,” he said.

St. Jacques said franchisors are broadening their scope of potential franchisees. “The challenge becomes finding franchisees with the right combination of business experience, management skills and now financing options,” he said.

The report projects jobs in franchise businesses will grow in 2010 by 36,000 jobs, compared with losing more than 409,000 jobs in 2009. The survey included quick- and full-service restaurants, retail food establishments, real estate and business services franchises.

For example, if they are recommending the “best franchises,” are they paid anything by the companies on their list? This could be a commission, kick-back or “consulting fee.” Many franchise brokers call themselves “franchise consultants” to hide their true identity. So, make sure if you’re dealing with a franchise consultant, he or she is not really just a franchise broker in disguise.
